Behind Closed Doors /

As in all of Joan Lunden's "Behind Closed Doors," she immerses herself in her stories, and for her segment about America's "silent service" (its nuclear submarine force), she literally submerged herself, living aboard the U.S.S. Key West, a nuclear attack sub stationed off the coast of Puerto Rico. She participates with U.S. Navy SEALS and is deployed out of the sub's hatch in the dead of night, during a reconnaissance mission in which her group encounters enemy fire. Lunden underwent submarine survival school training in Groton, Connecticut, to prepare for the report. During this segment, Lunden also reveals a crucial and previously undisclosed fact about the capacity of the Navy's fleet of nuclear submarines.
