James Patterson on CBS This Morning
This interview caught my eye today on CBS This Morning and I had to share it with you. Famous author, James Patterson is on a mission to encourage reading among our children, strengthen our childhood literacy rate, and to save bookstores around our country. We have enforced reading in our house from a young age and now our children love to read on their own. They see mommy and daddy reading around the house, they hear their older siblings sharing their favorite book recommendations, and also importantly, they see each other reading which promotes the "cool factor" of reading in the family!
Bedtime reading has become so popular that we now sometimes have to remind the kids to close the books when it gets too late! Sometimes late at night I'll walk by my 10 year old Kate's room and I'll notice the light on from under the door. I'll peek in to find her reading light on and her nose deep in a book and I'll have to whisper that it's time to go to sleep!
Reading allows our kids to explore other worlds and encourages them to use their imagination. It lets them learn about far away places and different types of people. So try an evening of turning off the TV and the video games for some quiet family reading time. This quality time can be incredibly impactful for your kids and also - incredibly therapeutic for the adults!
