If you're working this summer and can't stay home with the children all day, you might want a nanny. Nannies give your children personal care and attention in the familiar surroundings of your home. Your nanny is more than just a service provider. This person often becomes an extension of the family, making wonderful memories for your children and instilling important values in them while you're at work. .

Choosing the right person for this crucial job isn't difficult if you know how to vet the candidates. Asking these questions will help you find the perfect nanny.

What Is Your Work History?

The first thing you'll want to ask your nanny about is their  history of working with children. Ask about the ages and length of time they were with previous families. Ideally, you'll find someone who has worked with children in the same age range as yours so they are  familiar with the developmental quirks of their particular stages in life.

What Training or Education Do You Have?

The best applicants for a nanny position will have a background in early childhood education or a similar field. A college student pursuing a degree in this area is ideal, because they are  more likely to be an affordable choice who is willing to take on a job that only lasts for a few months while your children are out of school. You also want someone who is trained in CPR and has a knowledge of basic first aid.

What Types of Activities Will You Do with the Children?

How do you want your children to spend the summer? Are you looking for a nanny who's adept at planning craft days for your children, or one who will take them out to the nature preserve for some hiking? Each individual will have her own areas of expertise and preferred activities. Look for someone who's well-suited to the interests of your children.

What Special Skills, Talents, or Hobbies Do You Have?

This is a more unusual question, but it's something that you should know about your nanny. Do they  play the flute, have a passion for history, or have an aptitude for basketball? The best nanny will have something new and fascinating to offer your children.

What Morals and Values Are Most Important to You?

The ideal fit for your family is a nanny who prioritizes the same values that you do, whether this includes religious values and prayers before bedtime, or an emphasis on eco-mindedness. Remember that children will imitate the people they're around most often.

What Is Your Philosophy for Discipline?

Discipline is always a touchy subject for parents, so it's crucial that you discuss this area with your nanny. Perhaps you believe in time out, want toys and privileges taken away, or have another system for disciplining your children. Make sure your nanny is on board with whatever method you prefer.

Asking the right questions will help you choose the perfect summer nanny so you can head off to work confident that your children will have an enriching and entertaining time while you're away.
